This was to welcome and honour the recognition of Newar language as a State language by the Government of Sikkim. It revised, enlarged, modified version was brought out in 2001 with a total print of 5,000 copies, most of them distributed free in Sikkim, Darjeeling as well as Nepal. Nepal Rajakiya Pragya Pratishthan / Royal Nepal Academy also included it in its Glossary "Vivaranatmak Granth Kosh".
As Rachna Books & Publications completes 45 years next month, our hearts swell with gratitude and pride. Honhue Howzel’s beautifully written piece, The Quiet Revolution of Reading: Raman Shresta’s Legacy of Books in Sikkim, in The NorthEast Stories – A Journal of People and Places, perfectly captures this remarkable journey. What began in 1979 as a simple bookstore founded by Raman’s parents has grown into a literary and cultural landmark. Rooted in a rich family tradition of storytelling—nurtured by his grandfather, a devoted headmaster, and the oral traditions carried forward by his mother and grandmother—Raman has carried forward this legacy with unwavering dedication. Under his stewardship, Rachna Books has flourished into more than just a bookstore. With Café Fiction and Bookman’s Bed & Breakfast, it has become a welcoming space where literature, art, and community intersect. The launch of Rachna Books and Publications in 2019 further strengthened this vision, ensuring that important stories from the region find their voice in print. This year also marks another significant milestone for our family. Through Karuna Devi Smarak Dharmarth Guthi, our family trust established in 1997, we look forward to commemorating 50 Years of Sikkim’s Statehood on May 16, 2025, by presenting the 25th publication. This special publication will honor Sikkim’s journey within the Indian democratic framework and contribute to the ongoing discourse on governance and history. This article beautifully encapsulates the spirit of this quiet revolution—one that has shaped Sikkim’s literary landscape, one book, one story, and one conversation at a time. Our heartfelt thanks to Hoihnu Hauzel for this thoughtful tribute and to Raman & Sarvada for their passion, perseverance, and vision. Wishing them many more years of storytelling, community building, and literary excellence! #RachnaBooks45 #TheQuietRevolution #SikkimLiterature #RamanShresta #HoihnuHauzel #TheNorthEastStories #SikkimAt50 #LegislativeEvolution #KarunaDeviSmarakDharmarthGuthi |
