एक अनुरोध
स्मृतिमा स्वर्गीय मोतीचन्द प्रधान
विगत केही समयदेखि मेरो मनमा चलिरहेको खुल्दुली जुन यहाँहरु धेरैको ध्यानबाट पनि टाढिन गयो होला त्यसैलाई प्रस्तुत गर्न म एक सुअवसरको ताकमा थिएँ जहाँ एक सही मञ्च र सठीक स्थान जसमा अधिकांश दर्शक सम्बन्धित भई म मेरो लक्षित समूह पाउन सकूँ !
अवसर स्वर्गीय मित्र अनि स्वनामधन्य सहित्यकारप्रति समर्पित हाम्रो “शरद् छेत्री स्मृतिग्रन्थ” लोकार्पण समारोह, नेपाली साहित्य सम्मेलन, दार्जीलिङको सुधपा प्रेक्षागृह अनि जहाँ साहित्य र समाजका व्यक्तित्वहरुको दुर्लभ उपस्थिति थियो | मेरो स्वागत भाषणको अन्ततिर दार्जीलिङ, सम्मेलन र महानुभावहरुलाई धन्यवाद टक्र्याउनअघि मैले यो राख्न धृष्टता गरेको थिएँ -
मोती “जाँदा जाँदै मलाई यो तथ्य यहाँ राख्नबाट स्वयम्-लाई रोक्न सकिनँ कि हाम्रा एक पुर्खाले यस नेपाली साहित्य सम्मेलन, दार्जीलिङ को स्थापना तथा प्रारम्भिक कालमा जुन महत्वपूर्ण सेवा-योगदान पुर्-याइआए उहाँलाई शायद हामीले कहिंकतै जानीनजानी बिर्स्यौं कि! ती महापुरुष हुन् स्वर्गीय मोतीचन्द प्रधान जसलाई सिक्किमकाले दार्जीलिङका हुन् भन्छन् र यता दार्जीलिङकाले सिक्किमका वास्तवमा उहाँ दुवैका साथै कालेबुङका पनि हुन् कारण उहाँको नेपाली साहित्य अध्ययन समितिको स्थापनामा पनि प्रमुख भूमिका छ| यहाँ २६.७.१९३१ देखि २६.७.१९३२ दोस्रो र पछि ७.१०.१९३९ देखि २३.५.१९६५ सम्म चौथो अध्यक्षको रूपमा दुई दशकभन्दा धेर सेवा पुरयाए तर खै यसप्रति कृतज्ञता वा आभार प्रकट अझ यहाँ सम्म आइपुग्दा पनि कहीं कतै उल्लेख सम्म न भएको यस महान् व्यक्तित्वको!”

मोती “जाँदा जाँदै मलाई यो तथ्य यहाँ राख्नबाट स्वयम्-लाई रोक्न सकिनँ कि हाम्रा एक पुर्खाले यस नेपाली साहित्य सम्मेलन, दार्जीलिङ को स्थापना तथा प्रारम्भिक कालमा जुन महत्वपूर्ण सेवा-योगदान पुर्-याइआए उहाँलाई शायद हामीले कहिंकतै जानीनजानी बिर्स्यौं कि! ती महापुरुष हुन् स्वर्गीय मोतीचन्द प्रधान जसलाई सिक्किमकाले दार्जीलिङका हुन् भन्छन् र यता दार्जीलिङकाले सिक्किमका वास्तवमा उहाँ दुवैका साथै कालेबुङका पनि हुन् कारण उहाँको नेपाली साहित्य अध्ययन समितिको स्थापनामा पनि प्रमुख भूमिका छ| यहाँ २६.७.१९३१ देखि २६.७.१९३२ दोस्रो र पछि ७.१०.१९३९ देखि २३.५.१९६५ सम्म चौथो अध्यक्षको रूपमा दुई दशकभन्दा धेर सेवा पुरयाए तर खै यसप्रति कृतज्ञता वा आभार प्रकट अझ यहाँ सम्म आइपुग्दा पनि कहीं कतै उल्लेख सम्म न भएको यस महान् व्यक्तित्वको!”
हालसालै स्वर्गीय मोतीचन्द प्रधानको स्मरण गान्तोकस्थित नामग्याल तिब्बती अध्ययन संस्थानको २००८ सालमा प्रकाशित “स्वर्ण जयन्ती स्मारिका”-मा एक संस्थापक सदस्यको रूपमा सचित्र भएको देखें. उहाँ मेट्रिक परीक्षा पासगर्ने पहाड़वासीहरुमध्ये प्रथम व्यक्ति भएकाले उहाँलाई सम्मानसाथ रथ(मोटर)मा चढाएर सिन्दुर-यात्रामा दार्जीलिङको नगर-परिक्रमा गराइएको थियो |

यसर्थ हामी स्वयम्-लाई यस पुण्य-कार्यमा समर्पित गरेका छौं कारण यी महान व्यक्तित्वबारे केही ठोस कार्य हुन् अझ बाँकी नै छ जस्तो लाग्दछ जब कि उहाँका योगदान हाम्रो समाजप्रति महान अनि अनेक छन् | प्राप्त व्यापक समर्थन प्रचूर साथै उत्साहजनक छ. उहाँसित सम्बन्धित संस्मरण तथा घटनाहरु रोचक अनि ज्ञानवर्धक भएकाले यी सबलाई एकत्रित गरी एक ग्रन्थको रूपमा राख्न पाए यी महान् विभूतिप्रति सही श्रद्धाञ्जलि हुनेछ |
उहाँको जीवनकालमा गर्ननसकिए ता पनि यो हाम्रा आउँदा पिढीलाईलाई एक उपहार हुनेछ ताकि पछि न भनूँन कि हाम्रा पूर्खाले सबै आफैसँगै लिइगए हामीलाई केही पनि नछाडी, केही स्मृतिसमेत !
यहाँको अमूल्य सहयोगकोलागि अगावैबाट धन्यवाद टक्रयाउँदै चाडै प्रत्युत्तर पाउने अपेक्षामा |

In tribute to
Late Moti Chand Pradhan
For quite some time past I have been nurturing an idea in my mind - something that might have escaped the minds of the concerned and me waiting for an opportune moment and a right forum to offer in homage. I took the liberty to bring forth the issue that had been embroiling inside me in search of an appropriate place when most of the audience consisted of the group, the ultimate target.
It was the occasion of the release of our Sharad Chettri Smritigranth - a book is compiled and dedicated in fond memories of our late friend and litterateur par excellence - in the Sudhpa Hall of the Nepali Sahitya Sammelan, Darjeeling amidst a host of literary/social personalities. He has the rare feat of giving us 32 books in all - the last one just a fortnight before he breathed last virtually from his death bed out of the ventilator of a nursing home. Just towards the end of my welcome address here before thanking Darjeeling, the Sammelan and people -
“As I take leave, I could not stop myself from sharing the fact with you all present here today that an ancestor of ours, who had contributed so much to the formation and rearing up this Nepali Sahitya Sammelan, Darjeeling in its initial years, is no longer remembered knowingly or unknowingly. This great person is none other than late Moti Chand Pradhan whom the people in Sikkim say he is from Darjeeling and in Darjeeling he is known to be from Sikkim. Actually he belongs to both Sikkim and Darjeeling and even to Kalimpong as well where he had played a crucial role in the formation of the Nepali Sahitya Adhyayan Samiti. He served here in the Sammelan for more than two decades from 26.7.1931 to 26.7.1932 as the second President and again from 7.10.1939 to 23.5.1965 as the fourth but why no gratitude expressed to this great personality till this date or anything written about so long.”

Of late to come across late Moti Chand Pradhan was to find him remembered as the one of the founder members of the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology in Gangtok in their Golden Jubilee Souvenir published in 2008. I am told that he was the person to have been honoured with the Sindur Yatra by taking him around the city of Darjeeling in a vehicle (rath or chariot) for being the first amongst the hill people to have passed Matriculation examination.
With fading memories and many close to him no more, only a few like you could throw some light on his life and works. We shall just be grateful if you could help us writing on him in English or Nepali whichever convenient. We are in touch with his family as well and are quite hopeful.
So, we have assigned ourselves with this onerous task as much has to be done since his contributions to the society are great and many. Response to our personal contact with whomever we came across has been immense and quite encouraging. Interesting anecdotes or memories associated with him if compiled and put together in the form of a book at one place would be a befitting tribute to this gem of a person, no doubt.
We wish we could have done such a task when he was amidst us. Still, in tribute we would pay back to the society for the sake of posterity lest they say that nothing, even the memory was not left behind and we took them along all with us.
Thanking you in anticipation, we look forward to receive you co-operation in compliance at an earliest.
